Preparing for a taxidermy competition involves several key steps to ensure that your work stands out and meets the criteria of the judges.
Here are some tips to help you get ready:
- Understand the Rules and Requirements: Each competition may have specific guidelines regarding the categories, mounting techniques, and judging criteria. Review these thoroughly to understand what is expected.
- Select Your Specimen Wisely: Choose a specimen that showcases your skills and is appropriate for the competition division and category. Make sure it is in good condition and poses an interesting challenge for you.
- Research Techniques and Styles: Familiarize yourself with various taxidermy techniques and styles. Study successful entries from previous competitions, noting what worked well in terms of presentation and realism.
- Practice Your Skills: Before the competition, hone your skills through practice projects. This will help you refine your techniques and gain confidence in your abilities.
- Gather Quality Materials: Ensure that you have high-quality materials for your project, including taxidermy tools, preservatives, and mounting supplies. Quality materials can make a significant difference in the final product.
- Plan Your Design: Create a detailed plan or sketch of your intended design. Consider the pose, base, and any additional elements that will enhance the presentation of your piece.
- Focus on Details: Pay close attention to anatomical accuracy, coloration, and texture. Judges often look for attention to detail, so ensure that the final piece closely resembles the live animal.
- Optimize Presentation: Aesthetic presentation is crucial in competitions. Choose a suitable base or habitat setting that complements your mount and enhances its visual appeal.
- Seek Feedback: Before the competition, have experienced taxidermists or mentors review your work and provide constructive criticism. This can offer new insights and help improve your final entry.
- Stay Organized: Prepare your workspace and materials in advance. Being organized can help reduce stress on competition day and ensure you have everything you need.
- Practice Presentation Skills: If you need to present a written description of your work to judges, be carefull and clear in the communication and the choices you made. Clear communication can enhance the overall impression.
- Stay Calm and Focused: On the day of the competition, manage your time wisely and stay calm. Focus on delivering the best work you can, regardless of the outcome.
By following these steps, you can enhance your chances of success in a taxidermy competition while also enjoying the creative process. Good luck!

What are the Rules & Regulations?
ETC® Rules & Regulations.
Please refer to the newest ETC® Rules & Regulations and the ETC® Species List©. It’s a must for every competitor to study and know the ETC® rules. If you are not aware of it, you will get fundamental problems to enter your pieces. Excuses will not be tolerated!
Please find all relevant info and documents about Rules & Regulations, Species List, Score sheets and more…

How do I handle protected species and CITES species?
We kindly ask you to be familiar with the EU regulations and laws about handling and exhibition of endangered species. It´s the competitor/exhibitor’s own responsibility that no laws or regulations are violated during the ETC® 2025.
For CITES species the international regulations apply. All necessary documents must be uploaded in connection with the on-line registration process and must also be provided and shown upon request on location in Salzburg.
Please be aware that Annex A species of the Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 (Cites Annex I, e.g. Loxodontaafricana, Panthera pardus and Cites Annex II, e. g. Ursus arctos, Canislupus), especially hunting trophies but museum specimens as well, need a Cites Document that certificates the “exempting Annex A specimens from the prohibitions relating to commercial activities listed in Article 8(1) of Regulation (EC) No 338/97”. Otherwise, it’s not allowed to exhibit these species on commercial events like taxidermy competitions on game fairs. Some informal permit of an authority or a museum is not enough!
Protected species that do not have a necessary CITES permit with the entry will not be allowed to compete.
To find out the CITES status of a particular species, please consult the CITES website www.cites.org for an up-to-date check list and the contact details of the local CITES authorities.
If you have a question that is not clear from the general CITES website, you can take contact to: CITES Management Authority Austria Stubenbastei 5, 1010 Vienna
